 Election day breaking news coverage

 

-You are in one of two groups - video or text

The goal of this assignment is to report breaking election news on the Web. You are in one of two groups - video or text.

 

Text group

Jenn, Robin, Hunter, Stephen, Mark, Julie, Erin, Ashley, Katie, Heath, Lily, Annie, Allison, Jessica

 

1. You will write a text story for the Web that you will complete throughout class individually.

 

2. Set up an interview with a primary source ahead of time. Example: Head of the young republicans or democrats on campus. Interview with an Obama or McCain campaigner. Interview with someone running a voting site. Interview at a campaign headquarters. Your primary sources can help establish your story's angle/lede. It is encouraged to have multiple sources.

 

3. You need to include 1-2 ideas for other multimedia to support your story if you had the resources to do a graphic for example.

 

4. Plan to write at least three graphs within 20 minutes of class summarizing what's happening on election day using common sources and references. Email this first draft to both Peggy and I (mkmcollins@gmail.com, laurenspuhler@gmail.com) after 20 min. for editing. We'll edit quickly and send back drafts to you for your final story. Then  to add to the story and update with primary sources as the class goes on by making phone calls, going out into the field and doing research online.

 

5. You must have hyperlinks to data and facts such as polling numbers.

 

6. Due at the end of class Tuesday on TNJN.

 

 

Video group

1. You will shoot and edit an election day video in teams of three.

 

2. Set up an interview with a primary source ahead of time. Example: Head of the young republicans or democrats on campus. Interview with an Obama or McCain campaigner. Interview with someone running a voting site. Interview at a campaign headquarters. Your primary sources can help establish your story's angle/lede. It is encouraged to have multiple sources.

 

3. You may need to shoot the interviews or footage before class to meet deadline.

 

4. You need to include 1-2 ideas for other multimedia to support your story if you had the resources to do a graphic for example.

 

5. Students shooting video must make sure their cameras are checked out ahead of time and they have all needed equipment by the time class starts.

 

6. Due at the end of class Tuesday on TNJN.
